Ever have a wish list? I don’t mean a few thoughts as to what you would like to have occur but an actual written or typed list. If you decide to type one for yourself be wary of typos. You don’t want to get something that bites because you typed it incorrectly! If you have to think about it you are better off not making one. At least, so my wife says. Problem is, I wouldn’t wish me on a horse galloping off a cliff much less being the husband to a splendid woman. Life is odd isn’t it?
Actually, that last was not a question but more a statement accompanied by a question mark. Which brings me to those little curvy things we use in writing. We have splendid names for these to tell us what the hell we’re doing . . . if we know what we’re doing. Comma. Apostrophe. Why in the world couldn’t they come up with a better name for this>? Question mark? Really? Are you sure? You wouldn’t bet on that would you? Question mark, how bland and unexciting>! Of course, that last of the previous sentence isn’t exactly the bee’s knee’s either: exclamation point. Why not exclamation mark as long as they came up with that name because it is straight. A curve and a straight mark, or point, frames the voice of a person speaking.
Now you understand why my life is so difficult. While you’re out hunting deer or boating or drinking a beer with friends I spend my time trying to decipher what some people did long enough ago that they can no longer be held accountable for their thoughts or actions. It’s kind of like trying to put the Anglin brothers back in San Quentin once they drowned or made it to dry land, we’ll never get answers to punctuation nerds and their propensity for being stupid when they could have been straight forward.
You see, you came here again and I allow you to leave with something to think about that won’t start a fist fight. Unless we can find the morons who invented punctuation that is.
