Opine Hollow

Granted, mine is a single opinion among millions of people so I thought I would tell you what I think my opinion is actually worth. First, however, we should discuss what forms the root of an opinion. “Don’t be too quick to judge” is equally important in considering an opinion. Especially about an individual or small group. It helps if you know something about a person and what that person’s experience is before forming your opinion. Using myself as a ‘for instance’ some reading that which I write here will consider what I say sacrilege to their way of thinking or their ambitions in life. It is not a surprise that the opinions of we who have been in combat and killed have quite differing opinions of right and wrong. Were we right or were we wrong in just following orders? Well, when your buddy’s face blows up you don’t really have time to think about shit except that one ounce piece of lead that might have been meant for your face.

It’s easy to have opinions and we all have tons of them but, in the end, they aren’t worth the aforementioned ounce of lead. Except to the person who formed that opinion and if that person is lacking in character telling them their opinion isn’t worth anything will likely cause a small nuclear explosion. A defensive reaction as it were. Is it worth it to have opinions? In the end, one would suppose that having an opinion is what makes up the character of another human being? I pose this as a question as so many will say to you when asked, “I have no opinion about that.” Is no opinion a defensive position? Or, is it an admission of no backbone? We have heard it argued both ways and for the most part just let it go as changing another’s opinion is quite demonstrably a waste of time.

Are those who lack opinions hollow? You know, lacking what it takes to have an opinion that is worth fighting for. No guts to stand up for what one believes or is this just the antithesis of stubborn? Opinions are worthless unless they are backed up. What is an opinion, for that matter? Another’s idea about what someone is or has stated publicly? Are opinions worth the time it takes to form them? Is your opinion worth more than my opinion? Is an opinion worth punching another in the face over? How about starting a war over? Blowing up a dam over? Probably not for most of us. Opinions can change in a heartbeat, so it probably is not worth punching another in their opinion.

It is interesting to write about though as I usually write about things that I am ironing out in my own mind. Hey, I’m retired and have the time to do this sort of thing. In my “humble” opinion, it is worth my time to write these things here as I am known to be called, peculiar in my thought process, by others. Of course, that is their opinion and, who knows, they may be right in their opinion but not right 100% of the time. Do we retain our opinions when asleep? If we don’t have our opinions 100% of the time do our opinions lose their value?

There are tons of ways at looking at our lives but the lens best suited for examining our inconsistencies is probably by doubting ourselves in a healthy manner. At least, that is my opinion as of right now. Something said on a TV show tonight might change my opinion, right?
