I’ve never seen it, serendipity. One gets the possible hint of serene in that word but dipity? Dipity Doo Dah? What were ancient wordsmiths thinking? Doo Dah Dipity sounds kind of awkward so beginning with an s-e is probably smoother to the ear. Of course, we can’t forget the “r” as the joint that allows the word to curve a little. I always think of words with “r” in the place of a joint as the hinge of a word. You know, so you can fold the word up and squeeze it into your suitcase. You do have a suitcase don’t you? Or am I going all 1950s on you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I remember my first suitcase. I think it was basically cardboard with a couple silver latches on it. Of course, it may have been reinforced cardboard so it could stand up to airport baggage handlers. I do recall that it didn’t last long but then, we were far from rich. In fact, whether there was an airport in this story or not seems vague now. Maybe the idea was to put me in the suitcase and send me to Istanbul? The airplane would have been a prop plane because jets hadn’t been widely disseminated back then. Criminey!, I am getting old aren’t I?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Steam engines in my town and working when I was about five. Saddlebacks. On the mainline they were real track busting locomotives. Big old iron horses. Life was slower then. You used your brain or got run down by most everything. Crime was not unheard of but rare. Petty stuff, mostly. Everybody was in church on Sundays. Jews on Saturday. We all got along quite well but for the occasional verbal upbraiding of a slouch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now we have A.I.! What are we gonna do with it? We need A.I. like we need a shot of bad whiskey. I know you’ll agree that we can screw things up mightily all by ourselves, given our penchant for killing each other. “Oh well,” said the guy with the shovel. “Sooner we get to digging the sooner we get to water.” That little quote just slipped into my mind all by itself. This is why I write. I never know what thoughts are floating in our atmosphere that will slide into my head. That is the joy of doing this kind of thing. Either that or am I a daft idiot. Hmmm?<\/p>\n
