Coincidentally, the moon landings took place during the time I went from Boot Camp to Vietnam. I had no idea that we were doing this as the preparations for war, not to mention no comms in boot camp, kept us away from TV etc. When I heard via Navy comms that we had landed on the moon in 1969 I was, to say the least surprised. However, duty to our ship required my mind to be on only what I was doing, so I couldn’t hoist a beer or anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had to wait nine months to get all the news on the moon landing. Then, we went over to Vietnam again 71-72. I barely remember much about those flights. A headline here or rumor there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The other night I mentioned to my wife that I knew only a smidgen about all that transpired in those four years. My, how things have changed, eh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I just thought I would jot this down to reinforce the separation a person in combat has from what is going on in America. I know this applies to all who are serving in the Middle East also, if they are sailors. Then again, communications are so very different now than then. The internet wasn’t spoken of for twenty years after I got out and came home. Home, what a wondrous place to be.<\/p>\n
